TORTOISE. Live. New York City. March 16th 2016 (SOLD OUT)

(le) poisson rouge 158 Bleecker Street

Ok, So I'm adding live performances to my 500 list for 2016. Wanted to see this band from Chicago for years. They invented a genre. Wants to be jazz, but way too disciplined. Mind blowing drummer, no vocals, marimba, xylophones galore and a lot of SWING. Whooooosh. Let's add this into the top 25 or 30 shows I've ever witnessed. Me and my buddy Alex knew exactly when this band was kicking it big time. Letting a sample create a rhythm and playing a song perfectly in sync in the groove. Silly incredible. Joke of the night from the stage' "We're recording this for a live album tonight" Crowd goes nuts! "Ahhh.I just made that up. I learned it from Van Halen in the 80's.

VOLUNTEER 'Goner' (2014)

At the advice of someone, I bought this Milwaukee band's digital 4 song EP from their Bandcamp site.
So when a distorted bass is mixed as most likely the loudest instrument, it carries some merit if it has the groove and sludge of Kildozer, Kilslug, and dirty shit like Unsane. The first 3 songs on this 4 song EP are grungy as all hell and I dig the intense drumming. They must be a hoot to see live. So I was certainly not going to listen to more than 10 seconds of their 4th song, a Jawbreaker cover no less.  3 out of 4 ain't bad.

John Digweed 'LIVE'. Transitions series. Episode 600 on Mixcloud

FUCKING JACKPOT. If there could be everything I love about house music condensed in a 2 hour set, UK legendary DJ and producer John Digweed (aka "Diggers") has recently published a special episode right here. Without using the names Peter Rauhoher or Junior Vasquez who are my masters in the genre, Diggers saved up this live set from the club "Heaven" in London to knock the fucking ball out of the park. He's now in my all time greatest top 3. I met him once in NY and I asked him if he liked Marillion. He knew who they are, but he was drunk. Nice guy.
Some really dark shit going on here. Seamlessly woven into a 2 hour set and the cause of my repeated listening and neglecting to explore other music this week.
This one is worth it though. The end of this 2 set blows the roof off the house. Bravo Diggers. You've earned your status.

E.L.P 'Come and See the Show' (Best of ELP)

Because 2016 hates rock music, (Rest in Peace, Keith), I'm pausing to listen to ELP. Somehow though the years, I know a lot of the big songs and recognize Mr. Emerson as an Earthshattering player. Beautiful melodies. Have to delve into an album of greatest hits that I SHOULD know, but don't. I struggle to understand how these guys assembled a song as a power trio. It's not intuitive. Who plays what? How did they pull it off live and still sound so full? Note to self to catch some of their stuff on You Tube.
